The standard OS X upgrade process will not automatically delete your old data.
It is always a good idea to back up important files before a major OS X upgrade.

For example ~ installed games that automatically boot on start up. Various other dormant programs ~ Mac Mail
So easy to do on Windows but I can't navigate to the correct OSX system manager that will disable start up applications.
