Does an iBook G4 laptop require to have a battery connected, aside from the power adapter, in order to work?

An acquaintance of mine took a chance on a used ibook. The laptop didn't have a battery or power adapter, and he only bought a home adapter asuming that he didn't need a battery as long as he was using the adapter. Well, the ibook didn't work! Could this be because of the missing battery?

Nope, it should work fine without the battery. It's probably the dreaded unseated graphics chip issue. Have him plug it in, pick it up and hold it by the left handrest in one hand, thumb at the left front corner and fingers just to the left of the battery lock. Keep it held off the desk in that hand and start it up, if it boots there's a bad solder joint on the motherboard.
