iBook G3 Fix : Inverter Board

July 21st, 2009 | by admin |

My iBook’s display went dark even though the laptop itself was still working fine. Looks like a problem with the inverter board so I captured the process on video - from breaking the iBook apart to get to the board and putting it back together with the new board.

    Thanks for the …
Thanks for the video. I replaced my inverter board today. However, I did not have to take the base apart, I just opened up the screen embly, and followed the steps from there. Worked like a charm.

For myself, I picked up a precision screwdriver set from the Dollarama and used a putty knife and 1.5mm Hex Key (Allen Wrench) to take off the shell.

A cute sidenote … while you have your screen open, you can take some coloured paper to put behind the translucent apple for a nice little mod.

    i basically just …
i basically just used a variety of mini screw drivers. There are a few screws that needed special bits (Torx) so I had to buy a set at the local Radio Shack - Kronus label. They have more choices online. You can catch a glimpse of the set i bought at around the 2 minute mark ofthe video.

    Nicely done to show …
Nicely done to show its involved but not too tough to get deep into it.
I’ve done 2 inverter swaps that didn’t involve taking apart the base..just the lid/LCD.
HOWEVER, a common culprit to the same problem is the cable to the inverter that you DO have to disassemble the base to replace.
    Thanks

    cool video! thanks …
cool video! thanks because I have to fix the same problem for a friend and watching your nice little clip reassured me of what I need to do. I already have the inverter board and I’m hoping my problem is the same as yours. It works fine with using a external monitor so I hope that replacing the inverter board will be the answer.

If so, i would NOT be ablt to do what you just did in that video! lool :P
How much would it cost to send to the apple shop, and to be fixed?
