My iBook G3

This is the third addition to my Mac collection. This is an iBook G3 Second Generation from 2003. I originally got it with a common iBook G3/G4 video card problem where it would boot up to either a blank or garbled screen. This is because the iBook graphics chips were soldered onto the logic board poorly and through heat and age, the chip breaks free. This is however fixable by soldering the graphics chip back onto the logic board which is what I did.

I’m collecting all New World Macs (since the iMac G3) with PowerPC processors (not Intel). I will upload videos of each of them when I get them.

    Upgrading the RAM …
    Upgrading the RAM would probably help. I’ve also heard of processor overclocking in these iBooks.

    hey dude, i have one of thoes ibooks, mine is a g3/30gb/128mb/900mhz model, and the video card is bad, it just boots to a blank screen, but if you step on the mouse pad, yes i said step on it. it will boot., how does tiger run on them?

    No G3 based Mac can …
    No G3 based Mac can run Leopard as they’ve removed all the drivers for all past G3 Macs and they’ve only compiled it for G4 and up (AltiVec) and Intel processors. Running it on a G3 will always result in a kernel panic. However if you can upgrade a G3 Mac to a G4 processor, you can run it with a few tweaks.

    i have a ibook clamshell and it runs really fast, it plays youtube vids really well and it boots up in 30 secs.

    I have sold the iBook because the GPU just conked out and no amount of reflowing would fix it. I’m pretty sure that I say in this video how much RAM it has. If I remember correctly, it had a 40GB hard drive and 256MB RAM. You might want to bump the RAM up a bit though.

    YouTube videos seemed to run fine on the iBook. I didn’t really use iMovie back when I had the iBook so I’m not sure if iMovie would work well.
