Is there a way to run Mac OS 9 games on the OS X platform?

February 13th, 2010 | by admin |

I have just purchased Civilization: Call to Power for Macintosh only to have it delivered and find out that I need classic support to run it. Mac OS 9 isn’t up for legal download and I’m getting rather frustrated. Can I run Civilization on OS X Tiger with a patch or other program?

Not under modern OS X I don’t believe. I have OS 9 on my old iBook. You can buy an OS 9 disk off of eBay or Amazon if you look for maybe $15-30

And check the manufacturer site to see if they made a patch for the game or not just to be sure

If you are on a PPC based mac, you can get mac (10.0 -10.2) system disk and install Classic Support. Classic Support enables mac to run OS9 applications on OSX without installing the OS9 system.

No, Classic Support does not allow you to run OS 9 without installing it. Classic Support, a group of extensions for OS 9.1 through 9.2.2, is installed from OS X into a classic System Folder. You have to have a classic System Folder installed (or copied to the hard drive) before you can install Classic Support. OS 10.1 to 10.4.11 have Classic Support as an option, and limited function can come from OS 10.0 with some Macs. OS X Public Beta could install a limited version of Classic Support that did not include networking.

Classic Environment (running a software and hardware abstraction layer that allows you to open Classic applications) requires a PPC Mac (such as a G5, G4, or G3 processor) and OS X version 10.4.11 or earlier.

Booting the computer to a classic Mac OS requires a boot ROM that facilitates this. Booting to OS 9.x is not "Classic Environment". It is true classic boot independent of OS X. Macs built before January 2003 (and after approximately January 1998) can boot to OS 9.2. Some eMacs fall outside these ranges and require another 500 words of explanation.
