How to install new hard drives for OS X?
June 30th, 2009 | by admin |I recently bought two new hard drives to replace my existing drives. My Q: How do I install OS X onto the new drives, I want one as a boot up and the other as a backup. How do I go about configuring the drives to make one a the main drive and the other as the second drive?
First: Boot from the Mac OS X CD that came with your computer, or any other OS X CD (Put the CD in, then reboot while holding the "C" key), select your language
Second: You should re-format your drives. Go to the Utilities menu, select "Disk Utiliy", select the 1st drive in the left pane, click on the "Erase" tab, select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" in the Volume Format pop-up, then give your new drive a name and click "Erase". THIS WILL ERASE YOUR DRIVE!
Do the same thing with your backup drive.
Third: quit the application by going to the "Disk Utility" menu adn select "Quit".
Proceed with the installer and select the drive you want to boot on when it asks you… this will install OS X on the drive you selected…
For the backup, if you have OS X 10.5 Leopard, when you boot for the first time, the system should ask you if you want to use the other disk as a backup drive, just click yes…
