What is the difference between OS X and Windows?

August 30th, 2009 | by admin |

I keep on hearing that OS X is way better than Windows. WHY? What features does OS X have, that Windows doesn’t? They both seem the same at first glance.

Don’t tell me no viruses, I already know…. not such a big deal, never got a virus on my Windows.

MAC os x works
MAC’s run windows apps with parallels, windows cant do that
MAC’s literally just work
Windows has LITERALLY NO FEATURES!!!
like i cant stress enough how basic windows is.
no viruses (just saying)
MACS ARE NOT EXPENSIVE!!! a pc with the same specs is the same price, dont let those bullshitters tell you otherwise.
MAC’s ARE COMPATIBLE!!!! they run windows, and they have so they only have 1000 word processors… why do you need 100,000 word processors on windows in which half a trojans… and mac runs the windows ones anyway
MACs start up in a quarter of the time windows does.
Faster
no crashing
no errors
no headaches
I get crysis maxed out and 4x aa on my macbook pro

Mac is not based on linux. its based on UNIX.
MAC was the first computer that actually had a destop and mouse. then microcrap told them they would help create it, so apple sent them prototypes of the macintosh. then they stole it to make windows. only it hasnt upgraded since.

Here is just SOME features it has windows doesnt

and this is the MAIN reason osx is better

Windows steals what os x had 10 yeas ago. windows is so far in the past.

windows 7 is 95 with a new look

OS X is the Mac operating system, and is based on linux. Some people consider this better because malicious stuff isn’t generally written to attack linux based systems.

I think its preference more than anything else, virus issues aside.

The difference is pretty major. OSX is an operating system for Macintosh computers and Windows is an operating system for PCs. Apples and Oranges, no pun intended. Even a nurse like me can know a lot about computers.

    OS X is a UNIX-based engine.

    Several pros are:

    Faster Boot Times

    Easier to Troubleshoot

Every Mac comes with some very useful apps that don’t come on Windows. (Of course, you can easily download them for Windows, but ubiquity of app distribution can make or break a platform)

    Neat and contained system settings

    Doesn’t arrive with bloatware

Of course, The Linux Kernel kicks both OSX and Windows in the arse for speed and security.

OS X is always in future, and it’s really strong. Windows is worth only for Gaming, but using mac you can do whatever you want to

My Leopard is Solaris-Unix. It does not get viruses or malware.

I have Time Control and Time Capsule.

Apple had wi-fi TEN years before Windows "got it".

Well, both are software companies (Apple and MS) so the difference is software. IMHO Apple writes better software for creating creative pieces such as music, video, graphics, photography. It depends what you are used to in terms of user interface too. I prefer the logic of the Apple interface. You can also run Windows on a mac but if your main software runs in Windows i.e. accounting/business, gaming software… you are better off with Windows. If you are a gamer, there are way more games for Windows than for Mac.

A great article describing the upcoming and latest versions of either OS (Operating System) can be found here on Gizmodo. It’s a technical comparison and a feature comparison between Microsoft Windows 7 and Apple OSX 10.6 "Snow Leopard.

    http://gizmodo.com/5285452/os-x-snow-leopard-vs-windows-7-the-final-countdown

Other things to note as differences between the OS’s is just how they work: browsing folders, launching applications, setting things up, updating, installing and uninstalling programs, etc. This is purely subjective and anyone can argue in favor, or against, either OS. I would say go to Best Buy and play around on a Mac, or go to the Apple store and have someone try to sell you on it.

Applications are another thing to note. If there’s something on the Mac you like but end up with Windows be assured there’s an equivalent application. Same circumstance applies the other way around: if it’s on Windows, there’s something like it on Mac. A lot of big applications are also made for Mac as well, and features are typically the exact same: Adobe Photoshop for instance. However, on the same token, there may be plugins that only work on one platform that are not offered up on the other.

They are different, and you’ll probably figure out which one you like right off the bat. If you’re considering buying a new computer and just don’t know what though I would highly recommend waiting a few months until each company releases their new OS cause it’ll be worth it.

Yes Mac OS X is more secure, although Windows 7 has made great strides. Overall, Mac OS X has better technology under the hood. It runs faster, leaner, and more stable than any version of Windows ever did. The newest version of Mac OS X, Leopard, was kinda like Apple’s version of Vista. Lots of new features with the loss of a little performance and stability. However, Mac OS X at its worst still beats Windows at its best.(Everyone knows how bad Windows Vista is) Aside from the stability and dependability of Mac OS, it is also extremely powerful and easy to use. All the programs integrate with each other. Everything from your iTunes to email to word processing and spreadsheets integrates perfectly for a seamless user experience. The default programs that come with it are much better than the ones that come with Windows. Mac OS X gives and overall better user experience from start up to shutdown.

OS X is written in a different computer language (binary code, like 0101 1010), compared to the Windows language, (same digits are used, but interpreted (compiled) differently.

    Confused yet?
Don’t worry, it ain’t easy to ‘dig’, if you get my drift.

    Want an example?

    OK, here goes:
Let’s say the OS X (Operating System X, Apple or Mac) interprets an 8-bit (2 bytes), like 0101 1010 as an A (uppercase), and Windows (Microsoft or IBM compatible) as an ‘a’ (lowercase), there would be what is called incompatible code for the CPU (Central Processing Unit, Microprocessor, Brains), of the PC or Mac. Can you see the problem?

That’s the reason that the two don’t get along, they are not compatible.

(Apple has now tried to make it more ‘compatible’ with its OS to be on a ‘handshaking’ term with Windows, to make it possible for the two OSs to get along.)

Some years ago it was a popular idea that Macs were for the lazy or unintelligent computer user, because all simple tasks were done for you and that made it easier to run a computer, (never mind the cost).

In my opinion, Apple goofed, they wanted to make it easy to run their operating system and charge big bucks. Microsoft (Windows) made it a system open to developers to create programs, thereby offering many more programs to the public at a lesser price than Mac (Apple).

It is still a fact that Macs are less subject to coding and Virus problems, but it is also a fact that if one spends some time in becoming familiar with Windows you get to learn more of the ‘innards’ of an OS (Operating System).
    ;-)
