How to put a password on a file for mac osx?

January 14th, 2010 | by admin |

I have a macbook, its an 09 system and it comes with osx. Is there anyway I can lock a file with video/textedit documents inside it, so that to open it you have to put in a password? I’ve tried using disk utility but even though i set up a password for a file it opened as soon as i clicked it in finder, without asking me for the password.
thanks.

Are you saying you tried this, exactly:

How to Password Protect a Folder on the Mac:

Launch the Disk Utility application
Go to and select File > New > Disk Image from Folder…, and choose a folder to protect.
Choose “AES-128? encryption and press Save
Enter your desired new password twice (don’t forget it.)
This will create a Macintosh disk image (.dmg) file. The disk image contains the entire contents of the folder, but cannot be opened unless you supply the correct password.

To open it, double-click the .dmg file in Finder. A password dialog box will appear. Once you enter the correct password, the Finder will automatically unencrypt your data and mount the image as a disk.
