    You can have a 1GB chip in any of the aluminum PowerBook G4’s… Apple says only a 512 chip, but they will take up to a 1GB chip in the slot.

    It sounds like you have either faulty RAM, or the wrong type. I would try buying another chip that is specifically for the powerbook G4’s, and that should work.

    It is actually different… but it will work. The 12 inch older powerbooks use PC 2100, but they will work with the 15 and 17 inch pc 2700 RAM. So it will not use all the power available on the RAM, but it will work.

    The 867MHZ PowerBooks can actually hold 1.12GB of RAM. Apple only advertised them with a 640 max, but they can actually hold a 1GB chip for a 1.12 total. You can use the 2700 ram in the powerbook 12 inch as well.

    Mac RAM is the same …
    Mac RAM is the same as PC RAM. There are all different types of RAM and different computers take different RAM whether Mac or PC. he 12 PowerBook G4 holds up to 1.25GB of RAM for the 1GHz and above models. For the 867MHz model it can hold up to 640MB of RAM. I don’t know why Apple did this but the 12 iBook G4, at least one model can hold 1.5GB of RAM rather than the 1.25GB that the PowerBook can handle. However, the PowerBook G4 maxed out will still be more powerful than an iBook G4 maxed out.

    The second chip is soldered onto the motherboard. The only way to upgrade is to upgrade the slot… you can put a 1GB chip in the slot for a total of 1.12GB.

    is there a secondary slot anywhere? My sis as a 12″ G4 and she has 640MB which could only be made up of two separate chips; a 512 and a 128. Any ideas?

    This is a video for the 12 inch PowerBook G4’s. 14 iBook G4’s are different. Aluminum Powerbooks did not come in the 14 inch size.

    it can be any ram if you have a powerbook 12 you need pci2100 anything else wont work for the 12 inch. 15 17 inch uses 2700 up
