How many tiger barbs could I put in a 30 gallon tank?

February 13th, 2010 | by admin |

I want to get a 30 gallon tank and put some cool fish so I think some tiger barbs would be nice. How many could I put? Could I use an under gravel filter for them? Can I use fake plants? How many plants? Do they eat plants? Thanks!
What kind of flake food would I give them, only meat based or normal flakes? And how often could I feed them baby brine shrimp?

This is a fine size for tiger barbs. If you’re looking to house just tiger barbs (highly recommended) you could keep about 12-15 of them in here. Don’t let their current small size fool you, a they get to about 3" when fully grown.

Undergravel filters are dinosaurs of the filter world, and are outdated except in specific applications. Get a nice hang-on power filter, like an AquaClear 50. Be sure you have a heater.

Fake plants are fine. They are also safe with live plants. They appreciate the cover, but also need some open space, so try to put a group of plants on each side of the tank, and then some along the back, leaving the front open for swimming space.

EDIT: killerchief…you can’t argue with quality

wow that’s a big tank you have there i would recommend 15-20 with no problem.you can put in some fake plants about 3 and if you put in real ones they will ( well some because some aren’t bothered about the fact of a real plant) nibble on them but i got told its good for them but when You get some you might loose a few but that’s normal so wait a few weeks about 6 i know i have to wait 6 weeks aswell :( and then get some more.

    good luck with your tank.

    For a 30 gallon tank I would suggest a school of 10-12

Yes you can use fake plants, I’d use a fair amount of them so that the barbs have somewhere to hide and feel safe if they need to (they normally just swim around everywhere)

I wouldn’t use an undergravel filter, they’re just a pain in the ass.

Buy a hang on back filter, I’d suggest and Aquaclear 50, they have a whole basket of filter media as opposed to a tiny thin cartridge.

Also be sure to buy a heater (100 watts would be perfect) and to let the tank cycle.

here’s a link on the barbs and on cycling

    Best of luck!

EDIT: I love how darwin and I both suggested an Aquaclear 50 without even knowing it haha
